STR Wallpaper 101: Different Types, Considerations & Installation Tips

We’ve discussed our love for feature walls in short-term rentals time and time again, and demonstrated how important they are to make a space pop. One of our favorite ways to create a feature wall is using wallpaper.

But, not all wallpapers are created equal, especially when it comes to the demands of a short-term rental. In this post, we’ll dive into the different types of wallpaper, their pros and cons, and our tips to install them successfully in your STR.

Types of Wallpaper

1. Peel & Stick Wallpaper

Peel & stick wallpaper is a renter-friendly, low-commitment decor option that’s easy to install and remove.

Pro Tip: To ease the struggle of repositioning peel & stick wallpaper, try using a product like E-Z Hang Peel & Stick Wallpaper Helper to make the process smoother. And don’t forget your squeegee!*

2. Non-Pasted Wallpaper

Non-pasted wallpaper offers the most durable and long-lasting results but requires a more involved installation process.

3. Pre-Pasted Wallpaper

Pre-pasted wallpaper is a convenient middle ground between peel & stick and non-pasted options. It requires water activation to apply.

Wallpaper Materials

The material of wallpaper also plays a crucial role in durability, aesthetics, and ease of installation. Check out our cheat sheet, below!

2. Non-Woven Wallpaper

3. Paper Wallpaper

4. Fabric Wallpaper

5. Grasscloth Wallpaper

Understanding Pattern Matches

When choosing patterned wallpaper, consider the match type to ensure a seamless look. If you're installing it yourself, selecting an easier pattern match can save time and effort.

1. Random Match

  • No pattern alignment needed
  • Easiest to install
  • Common in grasscloth and simple stripes

2. Straight Match

  • Patterns align vertically at the ceiling

3. Drop Match

  • Most complex but creates the most dramatic effect
  • Requires aligning patterns both vertically and horizontally
  • Best suited for intricate designs
